Softball Splits on the Road

  ABILENE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team split a pair of Lone Star Conference South Division games on the road at Abilene Christian on Friday losing 9-0 and winning 8-4 at Wells Field. (Game 1, Game 2)

The first game was all Wildcats (23-23, 8-6) as they scored four times in the second and four times in the third inning. They pounded out 12 hits in four innings with five going for doubles. Four different players had two hits in the game. Brittany Rexroat pitched a shutout to improve to 10-7 on the season.

The Javelinas (23-23, 4-10) had seven hits in the game, but could not scratch across a run. Rose Stubbs (Garland/Garland HS), Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) and Amber Cherry (Splendora/Splendora HS) each had two hits in the game.

In the second game, the Javelinas jumped out to a 5-0 lead after just three innings. The Wildcats clawed their way back into the game scoring one run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to pull to within 5-4.

The Hoggies reclaimed control of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Amber Cherry smacked a one-out, two-run triple and later scored on Roxanne Rodriguez’s (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS) single.

The Javelina offense went wild with 12 hits in the game. Stubbs had a great game for the Hoggies going 4-for-4 with a double, three runs and three stolen bases. Cherry finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs, three RBI’s and a triple. Rodriguez had two hits, drove in two and stole a base. Freshman Kym Rigard (Humble/Atascocita HS) went 1-for-2 with two runs and two walks in her first career start.

Amanda Arriaga (Kingsville/H.M. King HS) pitched a complete game allowing six hits, four runs and two walks while striking out two.

The two teams will meet for the third game of the series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
