The Hoggies fell behind early to the Riverhawks (10-18). Rachel Powers drove in a run for NSU in the second inning and then pitcher Cayce Coleman doubled in the second run in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead.
The Javelinas loaded the bases with one out in the second inning, but did not score. They tied the game in the bottom of the third. After loaded the bases once again with one out Taylor Munguia (Houston/Cy-Ridge HS) drove in a run with a single. They tied the game on a bases loaded walk to Ali Bodnar (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley HS).
The Hoggies took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. After one out, Rose Stubbs (Garland/Garland HS) singled and stole second. A wild pitch pushed her to third base and she scored on Kaycee Bryan’s (Splendora/Splendora HS) ground out.
Amanda Arriaga (Kingsville/H.M. King HS) made the lead stand as she pitched a complete game to earn her 12th win of the year. The Riverhawks threatened in the seventh when Powers led off with a double. She reached third base with two outs, but Arriaga was able to induce a ground out to end the game. She allowed six hits, one walk and two earned runs while striking out three.
The Javelinas led throughout against the Bulldogs (12-10) in the second game of the day. They scored single runs in each of the first four innings.
The Bulldogs appeared on the verge of having a breakout inning in each of the first four innings, but Cassandra Hernandez (Harlingen/Harlingen South HS) was able to wriggle out of trouble on a number of occasions. In the first inning, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out, but did not score. In the second inning, they had runners on first and third with no outs and did not score again.
The Bulldogs finally got on the board in the third inning. They used a pair of Hoggie errors sandwiched around a Sara Harwell double to score a run. Hernandez kept them from scoring more thanks to a lineout double play to end the inning. SWOSU added another run in the fourth inning and the score was 4-2 heading into the fifth.
Hernandez shut the Bulldogs down over the final three innings allowing just one single to improve to 3-0 on the season. She allowed nine hits, one earned run and one walk overall.
Cassie Chambless held the Javs to only five hits, but the team was able to scrape across four runs.
Bryan led the Javs with a pair of hits, including a double while Jen Hall (North Pole, AK/North Pole HS) walked twice and scored twice. Janay Gonzalez (Alice/Alice HS) doubled and drove in a run. Stubbs scored once and drove in a run while improving her consecutive errorless game streak to 26 games at shortstop.
