Softball Extends Winning Streak to Six

ARKADELPHIA, ARKANSAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team extend their winning streak to six after sweeping two games from Henderson State on Monday at Dee White Field, 3-1 and 6-3. (Game 1, Game 2)

The Javelinas (13-10) never trailed in the two games as sophomore pitcher Amanda Arriaga (Kingsville/H.M. King HS) picked up two more wins.  It was the first time a Javelina softball team had defeated the Reddies (5-12) who owned a 6-0 series advantage prior to the doubleheader.

In the first game, Arriaga tossed a complete game allowing only five hits and one walk while striking out four.  She was able to provide herself with all the offense that she would need when she cracked a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the third inning.  She gave up a solo home run to Sarah Lankford in the sixth inning, but the Hoggies tacked another run on in the seventh on an RBI single by Kaycee Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS).

The Javelinas only managed six hits off Britney Benedict.  Ali Bodnar (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley HS) had two hits, a double and scored a run for the Javs.  Benedict allowed one earned run and one walk while striking out three.

In the second game, Arriaga came on in relief of Lindsey Brown (Spring/Spring HS) in the third inning and picked up her seventh win of the season.  She allowed four hits, one run and two walks while striking out three in 5.0 innings.  Brown pitched the first 2.0 innings, but is on a strict pitch count as she comes back from an injury.

Brown got the Javelina offense started in the top of the first inning when she doubled in Bryan.  Arriaga followed up with her second home run of the day to give the team a quick 3-0 lead.

The Reddies came back with single runs in the first and second innings to make it a 3-2 game.

The score remained 3-2 until the sixth inning when Taylor Munguia (Houston/Cy-Ridge HS) singled in Amber Cherry (Splendora/Splendora HS) who had entered as a pinch runner and stole a base.

In the seventh, the Hoggies tacked on two more runs.  Bryan led off with a double, her fourth hit of the game and fifth straight on the day.  She scored on Bryan’s team-leading fourth home run of the season.

The Reddies scored once in the bottom of the seventh, but could do no more damage.  They had seven hits in the game.  Amber Klug led the way with a pair of hits and a RBI while Heather Ivey scored twice.  Melissa Decker was tagged with the loss after allowing 11 hits and six runs in seven innings.

Bryan, who went 4-for-4 with two runs, a stolen base and a double, led the Javelinas.  Brown was 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs and three runs batted in.  Munguia and Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) each added a pair of hits.

The Javelinas are back in action on Friday when they travel to nationally ranked Angelo State to open up the Lone Star Conference South Division schedule.  The doubleheader will start at 3 p.m.
