
PORTALES, NEW MEXICO – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team had a record-breaking day on Friday at Lone Star Conference South Division rival Eastern New Mexico. The Javelinas won the first game, 10-3 and then won the second game 22-5 tying the school record for runs in a game and breaking the school record for hits in a game. (

In the first game, the Javelinas (20-15, 3-5) scored twice in the first inning and once more in the second to take an early 3-0 lead. Amanda Arriaga (Kingsville/H.M. King HS) drove in a pair of runs and Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) drove in another run.
Arriaga held the Zias (9-23, 1-7) scoreless through the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, the Zias scored twice on a two-run homer by Paige Colburn. Eastern New Mexico tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer by Katlyn Medrano.
The Javelinas exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning to put the game away. The Hoggies took advantage of four Zia errors in the inning. Berlanga smacked a two-run double and later scored when she stole home on a double steal.
The Javs finished with 10 hits in the game as Rose Stubbs (Garland/Garland HS), Kaycee Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS), Arriaga and Berlanga each had two hits in the game. Arriaga improved to 11-11 on the season after pitching a complete game and striking out nine batters.
The Zias had six hits in the game with Medrano and Colburn each nabbing two base hits. Erin Roufosse was tagged with the loss after allowing nine runs, two earned, in 6.1 innings.
In the second game, the Javelinas scored seven times in the fourth inning and 10 times in the fifth inning. The 22 runs tied the school record that was set on February 17, 2005 against Texas College. They broke the school record for hits when Ali Bodnar (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley HS) singled with two outs in the fifth to give them their 22nd hit of the game. They also set school records for most RBI’s in a game, 21, and total bases in a game, 43.
The Javelinas hit three doubles, three triples and four home runs in the game. Bryan went 4-for-4 with a double, two triples, three RBI’s, three runs and walk and two stolen bases. Berlanga was 4-of-5 with a home run, three runs and two RBI’s. Bodnar was 3-for-4 with a grand slam, two runs and five RBI’s. Roxanne Rodriguez (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS) was 3-for-5 with a double, home run, three runs and three RBI’s. Janay Gonzalez (Alice/Alice HS) cracked her first home run of the season, a three-run shot.
Cassandra Hernandez (Harlingen/Harlingen South HS) started the game and pitched 3.0 innings to earn her second win of the year.
The Zias had 10 hits in the game. Tessa Fioritti led the offense with a 3-for-3 performance that included two doubles, a run and two RBI’s.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday at noon for one game.
