Javs Top TSU, 7-5

  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – After dropping a pair of Lone Star Conference South Division games to Tarleton State on Friday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team got back on the winning track with a 7-5 victory on Saturday at Hubert Field. (box score)

The TexAnns (14-9-1, 4-2) scored in the first inning to take an early lead. Katie Welborn followed up Samantha Swanda’s two-out double with a run-scoring single.

The Javelinas (18-15, 1-5) took control of the game in the bottom of the second inning. They loaded the bases with one when Ashley Zamora (San Juan/PSJA HS) came through with a two-run double. Rose Stubbs (Garland/Garland HS) followed with another two-run double to give the team a 4-1 lead.

The Javs added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning when Taylor Munguia (Houston/Cy-Ridge HS) drove in a pair with a single.

Both teams scored a run in the fourth inning and it remained 7-2 Javelinas until the seventh. With two outs and two runners on base Arianna Rodriguez hit a three-run homer for the TexAnns to pull to within two runs, but Amanda Arriaga (Kingsville/H.M. King HS) retired the next batter to secure the complete game victory.

The Javelinas had 11 hits in the game. Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Stubbs added a pair of hits. Kaycee Bryan added her second triple in as many days and scored a run. Arriaga went 1-for-2 with two runs scored in addition to earning her 10th win of the season.

The TexAnns had 10 hits in the ball game as Welborn and Brittany Dumas each had a pair of safeties. Swanda was tagged with the loss after allowing 11 hits, seven runs and two walks in 5.1 innings. She struck out six batters.

The Javelinas are back in action on Friday at Eastern New Mexico for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
