
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Texas A&M-Kingsville senior guard Adam Morris (Goliad/Goliad HS) closed out his career in style on Saturday by leading the men’s basketball team to a 68-65 victory at Lone Star Conference South Division rival Incarnate Word. The basket and free throw by Morris capped off an incredible second half. The Javelinas (9-17, 4-10) trailed at halftime, 33-21, but Morris blitzed the Cardinals (16-10, 5-9) to the tune of 26 second half points. He scored 16 of those points in the first seven minutes of the half to keep the Hoggies in the game.
The rest of the team started to give Morris some help midway through the second half, but the Javs still trailed 60-50 with 7:47 left in the game. The Hog defense would allow just five points while forcing six turnovers the rest of the way. The Javelinas took a 65-64 lead with 1:32 remaining after Morris drained a pair of free throws.
The Cardinals tied the game with 1:14 left when Tracy Robinson made 1-of-2 from the line. The Javelinas were unable to convert a basket, but then forced another turnover with 28 seconds to play and set the stage for Morris to become the hero. The Cards were able to attempt a potential tying three-pointer, but it did not fall.
Morris scored a career high 28 points in the game on 10-of-17 shooting from the field, a 3-for-7 performance from three-point range and a perfect 5-for-5 mark at the foul line. He added three steals and two assists.
The Javelinas shot 40.6 percent from the field for the game, 26.3 percent in the first half and 58.1 percent in the second half. They made 4-of-13 three-point attempts and were 8-for-10 at the foul line. Ryan Wallace (Spring/Tomball HS) added 10 points while Ricky Simon (Lamarque/Lamarque HS) came off the bench to score eight. Marcus Ford (Colorado Springs, CO/Mesa Ridge HS) led the team with seven rebounds. The Hogs grabbed 31 rebounds and committed seven turnovers.
The Cardinals shot 37.9 percent from the field, made 7-of-20 three-point attempts and were 14-for-17 at the foul line. Robinson led the team with 17 points and nine boards. Chris Johnson posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Shaun Umeh added nine points, five rebounds and three blocks. The Cardinals had 48 rebounds, but committed 21 turnovers.
Morris finished the season shooting 84.4 percent from the free throw line, the sixth best total in school history.
