TSU Stifles Javelina Men

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The #25 Tarleton State men’s basketball team entered Saturday afternoon’s game at Texas A&M-Kingsville with the top scoring defense in the nation and it showed with their 57-37 Lone Star Conference South Division win at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.  (Box score)

The first half was a defensive battle with neither team able to accomplish much on the offensive end. The two teams combined for only 16 field goals and were a combined 3-for-21 from three-point range. The Texans took a 23-20 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Texans (19-4, 10-1) were able to get their offense going behind point guard Corin Henry who scored eight points in the first seven minutes of the half. While they only scored 34 points in the second half, it was more than enough against the Javelinas (8-16, 3-9) who were limited to only 17 second half points.

The 37 points for the Javelinas are the fewest they have scored in the shot clock era in college basketball. The last time the team scored less than 40 points in a game came during the fifth game of the season in 1965 against St. Mary’s when they were held to 28 points.

The Javelinas finished the game shooting 30.4 percent from the field, made 2-of-18 three-point attempts and were only 7-of-9 from the foul line. Adam Morris (Goliad/Goliad HS) and Marcus Ford (Colorado Springs, CO/Mesa Ridge HS) led the team with 10 points apiece. The team committed 16 turnovers and grabbed 23 rebounds in the game.

The Texans shot 44.4 percent from the field, made 6-of-21 from three-point range and were 11-for-16 at the foul line. Henry led the team with 14 points and eight rebounds. Fabian Wilson scored 11 points and had five rebounds off the bench. They committed 18 turnovers and had 39 rebounds as a team.

The Javelinas are back in action on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. against Eastern New Mexico for their final home game of the season.
