Javs Take One at St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team split a pair of games on the road St. Mary’s winning 2-1 and losing 8-2 on Tuesday night. (Game 1, Game 2)

In the first game, the Javelinas (7-7) did not manage hit until the seventh inning, but a brilliant pitching performance by Amanda Arriaga (Kingsville/H.M. King HS) proved to be more than enough to get the win.
Arriaga scattered four hits and two walks while striking out two to earn her second win of the season. The one run she allowed was unearned.

The Javs did not get a hit off Rattler (8-3) starting pitcher Emily Brittain until Roxanne Rodriguez (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS) led off the top of the seventh with a single. Arriaga grounded out to advance Rodriguez and then Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) drove in the run with a single. Janay Gonzalez (Alice/Alice HS) followed with a single and then Beth Etter (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) hit a pinch-hit double to score a second run.

The Rattlers scored their only run in the seventh inning on a one-out double by Richelle Morales, but Arriaga was able to strand the potential tying run.

In the second game, the Rattlers got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first and four more in the bottom of the third to take a commanding 6-0 lead. The Javelinas struggled to score despite putting runners in scoring position. They left 10 runners on base for the game.

The Javelinas finished the game with eight hits and walked five times while the Rattlers had nine hits and walked four times. Heather Haas pitched 4.0 shutout innings to earn the win and Maricalla Bissaro pitched the final three innings to earn the save.

Rose Stubbs (Garland/Garland HS) and Rodriguez each had a pair of hits for the Javelinas. Stubbs also drove in two runs from her lead-off spot in the lineup. Lauren Denney fell to 1-1 on the season after lasting only two innings in the circle.

Chelsea Wenske led the Rattler offense with a 3-of-4 performance at the plate while scoring two runs and driving in two.

The Javelinas are back in action on Friday and Saturday at St. Edward’s for a three-game series.
