Softball Wins One, Loses One

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – On the second day of the Texas A&M-Kingsville Softball Tournament, the Javelinas knocked off previously unbeaten Midwestern State, 1-0, but then lost to Southeastern Oklahoma, 8-7 in the night cap at Hubert Field. (Game 1, Game 2)

In the win over the Mustangs (9-1), Javelina pitcher Lindsey Brown (Spring/Spring HS) made a first inning run stand up. She scattered six hits and two walks while striking out four to pick up her first shutout of the season to improve to 4-1 on the year. She stranded five runners on base, including five in scoring position.

On offense, Amanda Arriaga’s (Kingsville/H.M. King HS) run-scoring single was all the Javelinas (5-5) needed for the win. Rose Stubbs (Garland/Garland HS) went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and the only run of the game.

Brittany Tanner pitched outstanding for the Mustangs with 12 strikeouts in 6.0 innings while allowing only four hits and one walk, but was still tagged with the loss. Elena Bennett added three hits and two stolen bases to lead the offense.

The second game of the day was a back-and-forth affair. The Savage Storm (3-2) scored three times in the top of the third inning thanks to doubles by Jennifer Morales and Ashley Lovelady and a triple from Lindsey Lacy.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Javelinas loaded the bases with no outs. After one out, the Javs scored on a squeeze play by Ali Bodnar (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley HS) and a single by Arriaga. Then, Roxanne Rodriguez (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS) smacked the first pitch she saw over the fence for a grand slam and a 6-3 Hoggie lead.

The Storm tied the game in the fourth inning. Lovelady had another run-scoring double and Lacy tied the game on a two-out, RBI single.

The score remained tied until the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, Christa Johnson capped off a 4-for-4 performance with a two-run homer to give the Storm an 8-6 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Javelinas loaded the bases with no outs, but were only able to score one run.

Kelsey Reding picked up the win for the Storm by pitching 6.0 innings allowing five hits, six runs and one walk while striking out five. Ashley Smith picked up the save in pitching the final inning.

Stubbs and Arriaga each had two hits for the Javelinas while Amber Cherry (Splendora/Splendora HS) had a single and scored twice. Arriaga pitched a complete game and was tagged with the loss.

The Javelinas are back in action on Sunday at 11 a.m. against Southern Arkansas and 1 p.m. against Midwestern State.
