Softball Splits at TWU

Melissa St. Clair tied Game 1 with a two-out RBI single  DENTON, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas Woman’s University softball teams played an entertaining doubleheader on Friday evening at Pioneer Field. The Pioneers (28-14, 5-3) won the first game, 10-9 in nine innings while the Javelinas (19-17, 7-4) won the second game, 8-4.  (Game 1, Game 2)

In the first game, the Pioneers jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led 8-3 after four innings before the Hoggies tied the game in the seventh inning. After both teams scored in the eighth inning, the Pioneers won the game in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out double by Megan Warren.

The Pioneers pounded out 17 hits in the game, including 10 in the first four innings. Warren hit solo home runs in the second and fourth innings and finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI’s. Angie Arebalos added a two-run homer in the first inning. Five other players on the team finished with two hits.

The Javelinas scored three times in the third inning. Kaycee Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS) had a run-scoring double and Ariel Lichtenberger (Alice/Alice HS) followed with a two-run home run, her team-high seventh of the season.

The Hoggies added an unearned run in the fifth inning and scored on a solo home run by Amanda Arriaga (Kingsville/H.M. King HS) in the sixth inning.

In the seventh inning, Jessica Schneider (Flatonia/Schulenburg HS) and Dalia Marroquin (Brownsville/Porter HS) opened the inning by reaching base. Cassie Anderson (Splendora/Splendora HS) followed with a two-run double. She later scored on Melissa St. Clair’s (Garden City, KS/Garden City HS) two-out single.

The Javelinas took the lead in the eighth inning. Marroquin had a two-out single and stole second base before scoring on Anderson’s single. Anderson and Marroquin each finished the game with three hits apiece.

The Pioneers tied the game in the eighth inning when Kayla Williams scored on a throwing error.

In the second game, the Javelinas jumped out to a 3-0 lead as they scored lone runs in the first, second and fourth innings. While the Javelinas scored three runs, they also left seven runners on base through the first four innings.

The Pioneers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after a solo home run by Jessica LaMonica.

The Javelinas reclaimed the lead in the sixth inning. Anderson tripled home Schneider and then scored on a ground out by Bryan.

The Pioneers pushed one run across in the bottom of the sixth on Williams’ two-out, RBI double.

The Javelinas scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Arriaga retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to improve to 6-1 on the season. She allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out four. Marroquin and St. Clair each drove in two runs during the game.

The two teams will finish their series with a single game on Saturday at noon.
