Softball Crushes the Competition

DURANT, OKLAHOMA – On the second day of the Lone Star Conference Softball Crossover Tournament Texas A&M-Kingsville easily beat both Northeastern State, 11-5 and Southeastern Oklahoma, 9-1.  (Game 1, Game 2)

In the morning opener against the Riverhawks (6-21), the Javelinas (15-14) continued their high-scoring ways. Despite managing only seven hits in the game, the Hoggies walked 11 times and were hit by a pitch on three occasions. It looked like the Javelinas would cruise to a run-rule victory after jumping ahead 7-0, but the Riverhawks fought back and actually put the tying run at the plate in the sixth inning before the Hoggies shut it down.

Ariel Lichtenberger (Alice/Alice HS) continued her second half surge as she hit a solo home run in the third inning and then walked three times and was hit by a pitch reaching base a total of five times in the game.

Jessica Schneider (Flatonia/Schulenburg HS) had another big game for the team. She doubled and scored a run in the second inning, hit a grand slam in the third inning and walked twice. She finished the game with three runs scored and four RBI’s.

Freshman Amanda Arriaga (Kingsville/H.M. King HS) picked up her third win of the season after tossing 4.0 innings allowing just one earned run. Lindsey Brown (Spring/Spring HS) came on in the sixth inning to snuff out a Riverhawk rally and picked up her first save of the season after pitching 1.2 shutout innings.

In the second game, Lichtenberger hit a first inning, two-run homer to give the team a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish. She finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBU’s and two runs scored. She has hit safely in 13 of her last 14 games and has reached base safely in her last 15 games. After starting the season 4-for-50 at the plate she has gone 18 for her last 36 with five doubles, a triple, four home runs and 15 RBI’s. She has hit a home run in all four Crossover Tournament games.

The Javelinas scored twice in the third inning. Dalia Marroquin (Brownsville/Porter HS) led off with a triple and scored on Cassie Anderson’s (Splendora/Splendora HS) single. Brown drove in Anderson later in the inning with a single.

In the fourth inning the Javelinas put five runs on the board. Lichtenberger and Brown each had two-run singles in the innings. Kaycee Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS) added a pair of singles, two runs and an RBI in the game.

Brown also picked up her 11th win as she pitched a complete game allowing five hits and two walks while striking out three in five innings.

The Savage Storm (15-15) scored their only run in the first inning on a solo home run by Ryan Allen.

The Javelinas finish up the Tournament on Sunday with a game against Cameron at 10 a.m. and East Central at noon.
