Softball Wins Doubleheader

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – After starting the season 4-11, the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team has won seven straight games to get back to .500 on the season. On Monday, they swept a pair of games from visiting Newman University, 4-1 and 11-1 at Hubert Field.  (Game 1, Game 2)

In the first game, Lindsey Brown (Spring/Spring HS) limited the Jets (0-8) to just three hits and one run as she picked up her ninth win of the season. She struck out three batters in 7.0 innings. At the plate she added an RBI double.

The Javelinas (11-11) put runners on base in each inning, but struggled to come up with the hit that would break the game open. Ariel Lichtenberger (Alice/Alice HS) continued her resurgence with two doubles and a run scored. Dalia Marroquin (Brownsville/Porter HS) added two hits, a triple and two runs batted in. Overall, the team had 10 hits in the game.

The Jets scored their lone run when Katie Traffas led off the third inning with a double and later scored on Stephanie Harshberger’s sacrifice fly. Allison Thummel took the loss after allowing 10 hits, four runs and two walks while striking out three in 6.0 innings.

The second game started like the first game as the Javelinas put runners on base, but struggled to score. They plated one run in the first when Cassie Anderson (Splendora/Splendora HS) hit her fourth triple of the season to lead off the inning, but they left the bases loaded.

Finally, in the third inning the Hoggies started to score runners in a hurry. After one out, six straight batters reached base via hit, walk or hit by pitch. Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) had a two-run single as the team scored five runs.

The Javs put the game away in the fourth inning when they scored five more times. Berlanga added another RBI single and Jessica Schneider (Flatonia/Schulenburg HS) drove in two with a double.

The Javelinas had 11 hits in the game. Anderson went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, Kaycee Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS) went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s, Melissa St. Clair (Garden City, KS/Garden City HS) went 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored and Berlanga went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI’s.

Freshman Amanda Arriaga (Kingsville/H.M. King HS) picked up her first career victory as she scattered eight hits in 5.0 innings. She did not walk a batter and struck out four. She also added a double and two walks at the plate.

The Javelinas hit the road this weekend for a three-game series at Lone Star Conference South Division rival West Texas A&M starting on Friday at noon.
