Hoggies Beat UTPB, Lose to St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – For the second straight day, the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team split a pair of games at the St. Mary’s Classic on Sunday.  They defeated UT-Permian Basin, 2-1 and then lost to St. Mary’s, 5-4.  (Game 1, Game 2)

In the first game, both the Javelinas and UT-Permian Basin scored a run in the first inning.  UT-PB scored after Alisha Carrasco led off the game with a double, stole third and scored on Shanna Dees’ two-out single.  The Hoggies scored when Cassie Anderson (Splendora/Splendora HS) walked, stole second and scored on Lindsey Brown’s (Spring/Spring HS) two-out single.

Over the next five innings, each team had their scoring opportunities, but were unable to come through when it mattered.

Courtney King (The Woodlands/The Woodlands HS) pitched the first 4.2 innings for the Javelinas.  She left with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth.  Brown came on in relief and induced an out to preserve the tie.

In the seventh, the Falcons put runners on first and second with one out, but Brown came through again by striking out one batter and getting another to fly out.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Javelinas put two runners on base with two outs.  Anderson came through with a game-winning double for the team.  Brown picked up the win by pitching 2.1 shutout innings of relief.

In the game against St. Mary’s, the Javelina defense let them down as three errors led to five unearned runs in a 5-4 loss.

The Hogs led for most of the game.  They scored single runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings to take a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.  Dalia Marroquin (Brownsville/Porter HS) drove in two of the runs while Anderson drove in the third.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Rattlers had two runners on base and two outs when Alex Garcia stepped to the plate.  Her ground ball turned into an error that scored two runs.  She would later tie on the game on Richelle Morales’ single.

In the top of the seventh, the Javelinas reclaimed the lead on Beth Etter’s (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) RBI single with two outs.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Rattlers loaded the bases with one out.  Another Javelina error led to two more runs and a win for St. Mary’s.

Brown pitched 6.1 innings in the loss allowing nine hits, five walks and no earned runs.  Heather Haas picked up the win for the Rattlers by pitching 1.2 innings in relief.  Anderson and Etter each had two hits for the Hoggies while Marroquin added a career high three hits.

The Javelinas are back in action next weekend at the Texas Women’s University Tournament in Denton.  They are scheduled to play five games on the weekend.
