SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team split a pair of games on Saturday at the St. Mary’s Softball Classic on the second day of the competition.  The Javelinas defeated Incarnate Word, 11-4 in the morning and lost 10-4 against Midwestern State in the afternoon.  (Game 1, Game 2)

In the first game, the Javelinas (2-3) fell behind the Cardinals 4-0 in the first three innings.  The Cards scored two runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Melanie Padilla.  In the third, they added two more runs on a bases loaded single by Sarah Holub.

The Javelinas responded with six runs in the bottom of the third.  After loading the bases, Kaycee Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS) singled and Ariel Lichtenberger (Alice/Alice HS) walked to bring home two runs.  Lindsey Brown (Spring/Spring HS) followed with a grand slam to clear the bases.

The Hoggies tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning.  After Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) and Dalia Marroquin (Brownsville/Porter HS) singled, Cassie Anderson (Splendora/Splendora HS) brought both runners home with a triple and would later score.

The Hogs added their final two runs in the fifth inning when Berlanga hit a two-run homer, the first of her career.  She finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI’s.  Marroquin went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Freshman Courtney King (The Woodlands/The Woodlands HS) picked up the win for the team as she went 6.0 innings while allowing 10 hits, four runs and four walks while striking out two.

In the Javelinas’ second game, it was one big inning that led to the team’s defeat.  The Hoggies scored first when Brown hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning.  The Javs added another run in the top of the second when Bryan singled home Christine Brumley (Waller/Waller HS).

Midwestern State scored one run in the second inning and then exploded for seven runs in the third inning.  Poor defense gave the Mustangs a number of extra bases in the inning while Mallory Mooney’s double plated two runners.

The Hogs added their final run on Anderson’s second home run of the season in the sixth inning.  She went 3-for-3 in the game and has hit safely in all five games this year.

The Mustangs added their final two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth.  Mooney was the star of the game for the team with three hits and four RBI’s.  Kristina Gutierrez picked up the win in the circle as she pitched a complete game allowing 10 hits and three walks while striking out six.

The Javelinas are back in action on Sunday at noon against UT-Permian Basin.
