Hogs Even Series with Wildcats

  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team overcame a slow start to finish strong and defeat visiting Lone Star Conference South Division rival Abilene Christian on Saturday at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court, 76-65.  It evened the season series at 1-1 after ACU won 79-72 on Tuesday.  (box score)

The Wildcats (8-14, 1-6) jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Javelinas (12-10, 2-5) scored on a Ryan Wallace (Spring/Tomball HS) jumper 3:25 into the game.  The Hogs quickly tied the game at 11-11 after a Naquawn Lee (San Antonio/East Central HS) jumper with 12:49 left in the first half.  The Hoggies went into halftime with a 35-33 lead.

In the second half, the Wildcats tied the score one their first possession, but the Hoggies immediately reclaimed the lead on a Flavio Milam (Killeen/Ellison HS) jumper.  The Javelinas would never relinquish that lead.

Both teams struggled to score through the first 10 minutes of the second half, but then the Javelinas started to heat up.  Over the final 9:07 of the game, the Javelinas scored 28 points and won going away.

The Javelinas shot 41.7 percent for the game improving their record to 8-0 on the season when they shoot at least 40 percent from the field.  They went 4-for-19 from three-point range and went 22-for-31 from the foul line.  Lee led the team with a career high 24 points and eight rebounds.  She went 6-for-12 from the field and made 10-of-12 from the foul line.  Royce Gaye (Houston/Klein HS) added 15 points and six rebounds while Antwan Mullins (Katy/Cinco Ranch HS) had 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.  Milam had an outstanding all-around performance with nine points, five assists, five steals and two blocks.  The Javs committed 11 turnovers while forcing the Wildcats into 18.

The Wildcats shot 39.3 percent from the field, made 4-of-21 three-point attempts and were 13-for-15 from the foul line.  Eddie Thompson led the team with 13 points and three assists.  Giordan Cole posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  They pulled down four more rebounds than the Javelinas.

The Hogs are back in action on Wednesday at Angelo State at 8 o’clock.
