
STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team traveled to Lone Star Conference rival Tarleton State on Thursday night in Wisdom Gym and dropped a 3-1 decision. (

The Javelinas (9-10, 4-4) won a dramatic first set despite trailing 24-20. The Hoggies scored four straight points to tie the score at 24-24 on a Bethany Friesenhahn (Poth/Poth HS) kill. Friesenhahn tied the score again at 25-25 before the team scored the final three points to take a 28-26 win.
The TexAnns (16-7, 3-4) took the next two sets at a flurried pace, 25-18 and 25-9. Then trailing 18-12, Tarleton went on a 13-4 tear to win the match and maintain their undefeated record at home.
The Javelinas struggled on the attack hitting a .122 percentage compared to Tarleton’s .226. Lauryn Lozano (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) led the team with 12 kills while Amanda Waclawczyk (Poth/Poth HS) added nine kills and four blocks. Amanda Yeager (Brenham/Brenham HS) dished out 24 assists. Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) anchored the defense with 26 digs.
Flynn Harrell and Irelis Ilarraza led the TexAnn attack, each collecting 13 kills. Danielle Barker had a 23-assist, 13-dig night, while Jessie Hartman added 17 assists and 11 digs.
Shea McBrearty headed the Tarleton defense once again, recording 27 digs in the match, with Catherine Cutbirth contributing 5 assisted blocks.
The Javelinas are off until next Thursday when they travel to Eastern New Mexico.
On Saturday, the Javelinas will host a “Take a Kid to the Game” clinic hosted by Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg starting at 1 p.m. at the Steinke Physical Education Center. The clinic is for girls age 13 and under.
