Javelinas Prevail in Overtime

  LAWTON, OKLAHOMA – Texas A&M-Kingsville and Cameron University played a hot-and-cold women’s basketball game, but the Javelinas prevailed in overtime by a 84-78 score in Lone Star Conference crossover action on Thursday night.  (box score)

The Javelinas (11-3) jumped on the Aggies (4-9) in the first half behind the hot shooting of senior guard Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS).  Soza knocked down her first seven shots en route to 16 first half points.  The game appeared to be well in hand after a Kayla Naylor (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) gave the team a 24-point lead with 1:48 left in the first half.

Somebody forgot to tell the Aggies that the game was over though and they battled back.  In the second half, the Javelinas suddenly went cold from the field making 33.3 percent of their shots, including a 2-for-9 performance from three-point range.  The Aggies caught fire in the half hitting on 53.8 percent of their shots.  Luv Rattler and Josie Stewart led the comeback as they combined for 34 second half points.

A 10-0 run by the Aggies midway through the second half finally cut the lead to under double figures.  The Hoggies still held an 8-point lead after a lay-up by Soza with 5:44 left in regulation.  A 6-0 run by the Aggies cut the deficit to two points with two minutes remaining.

The Aggies took their first lead of the game on a jumper by Stewart with 31 seconds left in regulation.  The Javelinas reclaimed the lead on a three-pointer by Dyana Bullinger (Spring/Klein HS) with 13 seconds left to take a 66-64 lead.  The Aggies sent the game to overtime when Stewart was fouled with three seconds left and she made both of her free throws.

In overtime, the Javelinas never trailed as they went 9-for-13 from the foul line and made all three of their three-point attempts.

The Javelinas were led by Soza who had a game high 25 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had three steals in 40 minutes of action.  Naylor added 15 points and nine rebounds while making 7-of-8 from the foul line.  Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) came off the bench to score 15 points.  Bullinger finished with nine points, five rebounds and four steals.  The team shot 44.6 percent from the field, made 9-of-24 from three-point range and was 17-for-26 at the foul line.  They forced 26 turnovers while committing 18.

The Aggies were led by Stewart and Rattler who each had over 20 points.  Stewart finished with 24 points and eight rebounds while making 10-of-12 from the foul line.  Rattler had 22 points and was a perfect 5-for-5 at the foul line.  Alexis Williams added 14 points and seven rebounds while Tera Tremayne chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.  They shot 44.1 percent from the floor, made 6-of-22 three-pointers and 20-of-24 from the foul line.  The outrebounded the Javelinas by a 45-31 margin.

The Javelinas scored at least 80 points in a game for the 10th time this year.  They now travel to Southwestern Oklahoma for a 2 o’clock tip-off on Saturday.
