Javelinas Pick Up Eighth Win

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Playing without star outside hitter Sha Tramble (Houston/Clear Brook HS), the Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team was still able to pull out the win at Our Lady of the Lake late Tuesday night by a score of 25-17, 18-25, 25-21, 20-25, 16-14.  (box score)

The win improved the Javelinas’ record to 8-2 on the season, the best start in school history.  Picking up the slack for the injured Tramble was senior Adina Gray (Corpus Christi/Flour Bluff HS) who had a team high 12 kills to go with a .296 attack from her outside hitter spot.  Middle blockers Kristin Chancellor (Bellville/Bellville HS) and Amanda Waclawczyk (Poth/Poth HS) each played well.  Chancellor finished with 12 kills, a .391 attack and five blocks while Waclawczyk had 10 kills and a .444 attack.

The Javelinas pounded out 62 kills in the match.  The team posted attack percentages of .269, .324 and .323 in the three sets they won and just .057 and -.023 in the sets they lost.

Freshman middle blocker Breane Matula (Magnolia/Magnolia HS) made the most of her opportunities as she came in late in the match and pounded out the final two kills to clinch the win.

Tara Grier (Poth/Poth HS) and Kirby Krueger (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) each had double-doubles for the team.  Grier had 27 assists and 17 digs while Krueger had 26 assists and 15 digs.  Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) added 17 digs as well.

The Javelinas travel to St. Thomas for a 7 o’clock match on Thursday night before returning home next Tuesday against Texas A&M-International.
