Javelinas Split on Saturday

  DENTON, TEXAS – After seeing their season opening six match win streak come to an end on Friday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday at the Texas Woman’s University Tournament.  The Javelinas lost to #10 Washburn 25-14, 25-13, 25-23 and defeated Southern Arkansas by a score of 25-17, 25-12, 25-19.

The Javelinas (7-2) struggled in their loss against the best opponent they have faced all season in the undefeated Washburn.  Junior Sha Tramble (Houston/Clear Brook HS) led the attack with seven kills and contributed nine digs.  Tara Grier (Poth/Poth HS) added six kills and 13 assists while Chelsea Hower (Kingsville/H.M. King HS) led the team with a .308 attack and six kills.  Overall, the team had a .065 attack percentage and only 28 kills.

Washburn was led by Mollie Lacy who had 15 kills in 20 chances without an attack error.  Kate Hampson directed the attack with 30 assists while Molly Smith led the way with 12 digs.  Breanna Lewis added eight kills and a .636 attack as the team finished the match with 45 kills and a .354 attack percentage.

The second match of the day went much better for the Javelinas as they easily defeated the Lady Muleriders in three sets.  Tramble was once again the leader of the Javelina attack, but she had a lot of helpers.  Tramble pounded out a match high 12 kills and a .733 attack.  Three other Hoggies posted attack percentages over .400.

Sophomore Amanda Waclawczyk (Poth/Poth HS) had five kills in nine chances without an error while Kristin Chancellor (Bellville/Bellville HS) had eight kills and a .467 attack.  Grier continued her strong play with seven kills, 15 assists and a .429 attack.  Kirby Krueger (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) led the team with 16 assists while Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) had 10 digs.  As a team, the Javelinas finished with a .358 attack percentage and just nine attack errors.

The Lady Muleriders were led by Maggie Glover who had nine kills and a .316 attack and Michaela Scroggins who dished out 23 assists.

The Javelinas are on the road this upcoming week for matches at Our Lady of the Lake on Tuesday and St. Thomas on Thursday.
