Pioneers Too Much for Hoggies

  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The visiting Texas Woman’s University volleyball team proved to be too much for Texas A&M-Kingsville in a Lone Star Conference match on Saturday as the Pioneers won 25-18, 25-21, 15-25, 25-14 at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.  (box score)

Each of the first two sets followed the same script with the Pioneers (8-8, 1-1) taking an early lead, the Javelinas (9-5, 0-2) closing the gap and finally the Pioneers pulling out the win.
In the third set, the Hoggies dominated from start to finish as they took advantage of mistakes made by the visitors and attacked at a .200 percentage.

The tables turned again in the fourth set as the Pioneers hit their stride on the attack.  They pounded out 16 kills and a.293 attack to easily win the final set.

The Javelinas received a number of strong performances. Senior setters Kirby Krueger (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) and Tara Grier (Poth/Poth HS) each posted double-doubles.  Krueger had 22 assists and 16 digs while Grier had 15 assists and 18 digs.  Senior middle blocker Kristin Chancellor (Bellville/Bellville HS) led the attack with 11 kills, a .333 attack and four blocks.

Hoggie freshman Cady Mercer (Katy/Katy HS) came in during the second set and proceeded to pound out 10 kills and managed 13 digs for her first career double-double.  Another freshman, Ali Insell (The Woodlands/The Woodlands HS) chipped in with 16 digs.

The Pioneers were led by Katelyn Osborne who led all players with 16 kills, a .750 attack and six blocks.  Hayley Summers contributed eight kills and a team high 18 digs.  Alyson Harlan added 12 kills and seven digs.  Heather Maddox had a double-double with 12 assists and 10 digs while Jessica Crow led the team with 24 assists.

The Javelinas go on the road for their next five matches starting with Southwestern Oklahoma on Thursday in Weatherford, OK at 7 o’clock.
