Javs Topped by Lions

  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team opened up Lone Star Conference play on Thursday night with high hopes, but they were quickly dashed by visiting Texas A&M-Commerce as the Lions won 25-22, 25-16, 25-23 in front of 573 people at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.  (box score)

The Javelinas (9-4, 0-1) fell behind early in the first set, but quickly responded and took a 14-11 lead.  The Lions (13-3, 1-0) came back strong and closed out the set with a 14-8 run.  The Hoggies attacked at a .314 percentage while the Lions were at a .282 clip.

In the second set, the Lions posted a .367 attack to easily outpace the Javs.

It appeared that the Lions would run away with the third set when they led 20-12, but the Hoggies were not finished fighting.  The team went on a 6-1 run to close the gap and then pulled to within one point on two occasions, 23-22 and 24-23, but the Lions held on for the win.

The Javelinas were led by senior setter Tara Grier (Poth/Poth HS) who nearly posted a triple-double.  She finished the match with a team high 12 kills, .500 attack, 20 assists eight digs.  Another senior, Adina Gray (Corpus Christi/Flour Bluff HS), added eight kills on a .353 attack.  Junior Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) led the team with 16 digs.  The team finished with a .203 attack percentage.

The Lions were led by Naomi Mays who had 14 kills.  Perla Faudoa led the team with 34 assists while Lauren Flynn had 25 digs in the match.  Amy Addison added nine kills and seven digs.  They finished with a .283 attack percentage.

The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at 1 o’clock against Texas Woman’s University.
