Javelinas Sneak Into Playoffs

  SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – After losing at #4 Angelo State University, 5-2 on Sunday afternoon, the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team needed some help to get into the Lone Star Conference playoffs. (box score)

The Javelinas (29-20, 8-10) entered Sunday tied with the Tarleton State University in the LSC South Division standings.  With the loss, the Hoggies needed Texas Woman’s University to defeat the TexAnns.  The Pioneers came through with a 3-1 win in extra innings to send the Hoggies to the playoffs.

In the Javelina-Rambelles game, ASU jumped out to a 5-0 lead.  Megan Pumphrey hit a solo home run in the second inning and then added four more runs in the third inning.  Alix Dean had a two-run homer to cap off the inning.

The Javs scored twice in the fifth inning.  First, Jasmine Ross (Camilla, GA/Camilla HS) hit a triple and then Cassie Anderson (Splendora/Splendora HS) hit a two-out, two-run homer.  Courtney Rigamonti (Victoria/St. Joseph HS) allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out three in the loss.

April Haywood picked up the win for the Belles.  She allowed four hits, three walks and two runs while striking out four batters.

The Javelinas will play nationally ranked Southeastern Oklahoma Friday in the first round of the LSC Tournament.
