Javs Stay in Playoff Race

Courtney Rigamonti shut down the Rambelles on Saturday  SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team split a pair of games on Saturday at #4 Angelo State University to stay in the Lone Star Conference Playoff race.  (Game 1, Game 2)

The Javelinas (29-19, 8-9) received a career best pitching performance from senior Courtney Rigamonti (Victoria/St. Joseph HS) in the first game.  She limited the powerful Rambelles (37-8, 13-4) offense to just one hit and no runs in a 1-0 win.  Rigamonti allowed just four batters to reach base; two via error, one by a hit batsmen and one hit.  The ‘Belles put a runner on third with two outs in the seventh inning, but Rigamonti struck out the final batter to preserve her 25th win of the season.  She had eight strikeouts in the game.

The Javs scored their lone run of the game in the top of the first inning.  Cassie Anderson (Splendora/Splendora HS) reached by base by an error and later scored on a two-out single by Shaun Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS).  Bryan finished the game with two hits.

ASU star freshman Sandy James had her 24-game hitting streak snapped in the first game.
In the second game, Macy Baker provided all the offense the ‘Belles would need in their 2-0 win.  First, she hit a solo home run in the first inning and then she drove in the only other run of the game with a double in the third inning.  Haywood picked up the win for ASU by allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out three.  Baker finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate.

The Javs threatened to score in the fifth inning when Jessica Schneider (Schulenburg/Flatonia HS) reach third base, but was stranded.  Rigamonti was handed the loss despite allowing five hits, two runs and no walks while striking out seven.

The Javelinas remain tied with Tarleton State University for the fourth and final playoff spot out of the LSC South Division.  If the Hoggies win on Sunday against ASU they will advance to the conference playoffs.  If the Hoggies lose, they will need a Tarleton State loss to earn a playoff berth.  The Javs play ASU at one o’clock on Sunday.
