Hoggies and Rattlers Split Doubleheader

Cassie Anderson went 4-for-5 against St. Mary's  SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team traveled to St. Mary’s University on Wednesday and came away with a split.  They won the first game 7-6 in nine innings and lost the second game, 14-2 in five innings.  (Game 1, Game 2)

In the first game, the Javelinas (23-16) fell behind early, took a lead in the seventh inning and then finally won in the ninth inning.  The Rattlers (21-24) scored two runs in the first inning thanks to Lia Provence’s run-scoring double.  She would then score on Kelly Baker’s single.  St. Mary’s would tack on a run in the third inning when Arlynda Flores hit her 16th home run of the season.

The Javs started their comeback in the fourth inning.  Cassie Anderson (Splendora/Splendora HS) and Meisha Patterson (Dumas/Dumas HS) started the inning with back-to-back doubles.  Patterson would later score due to an error.  In the bottom half of the inning, the Rattlers responded by scoring two runs after two outs had been made.

In the top of the sixth inning, Anderson led off with her third home run of the season to make it a 5-3 game.  In the seventh, the Javs loaded the bases with no outs and then took advantage of back-to-back Rattler errors to tie the game.  They would take the lead on an Anderson single.

The Rattlers tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.  Sade Moore singled and advanced to second on an error.  She scored after one out on Kelly Baker’s single.

Neither team scored in the eighth inning, but in the ninth the Javelinas were able to scrape one run across the plate.  They loaded the bases with one out and Patterson’s sacrifice fly brought in what proved to be the game-winning run.

Anderson led the Javelinas with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate that included a double, home run, two RBI’s and two runs scored.  Jasmine Ross (Camilla, GA/Camilla HS) added two hits, an RBI and a run.  Courtney Rigamonti (Victoria/Memorial HS) picked up her 19th win of the season.  Cassandra Hernandez (Harlingen/South HS) pitched 2.0 shutout innings in relief.

Moore led the Rattlers with four hits while Provence and Baker each had two hits and two RBI’s.  Taryn Munoz was handed the loss despite allowing just one run in 2.2 innings of work.

In the second game, the Rattler offense was hitting on all cylinders.  They scored five runs in the first and second innings and cruised to the easy 14-2 win.  Moore went 3-4 with three runs scored while Flores went 3-for-3 with a double, home run, three RBI’s and two runs scored.  Baker went 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.  The team rapped out 14 hits in just four innings.  Flores also picked up the win on the mound as she pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The Javelinas got an RBI single from Kaycee Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS) and an RBI double by Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) to account for the team’s two runs.

The Javelinas are back in action on Friday at 5 o’clock in a home doubleheader against Lone Star Conference rival Texas Woman’s University.
