Hoggies Split with #4 Savage Storm

DURANT, OKLAHOMA – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team got a great pitching performance from Courtney Rigamonti (Victoria/St. Joseph HS) and a couple of home runs to defeat #4 Southeastern Oklahoma 3-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.  The Savage Storm came back with an 11-3 victory in the second game. (Game 1, Game 2)

In the first game, the Javelinas (22-13) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a Christine Brumley (Waller/Waller HS) two-run homer in the second inning.  That would be all Rigamonti needed as she scattered six hits and two walks over seven innings to pick up her second shutout of the season.  She struck out four batters and snuffed out a seventh inning rally to earn her 18th win of the season.

The Javelinas tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Shaun Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS) hit a lead-off home run.  Jami McAdoo was tagged with the loss for the Savage Storm (35-7).  She pitched a complete game allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out three.

It appeared that the Javelinas might sweep the Savage Storm with the way they started the second game.  The team pushed across a run in the third inning when Meisha Patterson (Dumas/Dumas HS) doubled in Cassie Anderson (Splendora/Splendora HS).  In the fifth inning the Hoggies tacked on two more runs.  Janay Gonzalez (Alice/Alice HS) hit her first home run of the season and then Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) drove in Anderson with a single.

Through four innings, Javelina starting pitcher Kelli Sears (Floresville/Floresville HS) had allowed no runs and just one hit.  She retired the first two batters she faced in the fifth inning before giving up a hit and a walk.  Bailey Mathes tied up the game with a three-run homer.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Storm put their first two runners on base and Sears went to the showers.  Rigamonti came on in relief, but could not recapture her first game magic.  A sacrifice bunt, three walks and a base hit later the score was 5-3 Storm.  After a strikeout, the Hoggies committed a costly error that led to five unearned runs.  Amanda Tanner ended the game with a three-run homer.

The Javelinas rapped out seven hits in the game with Anderson and Berlanga each getting a pair of safeties.

Tanner pitched the first 4.2 innings allowing seven hits and three runs.  McAdoo closed out the game by allowing a walk and striking out a batter in 1.1 innings to pick up the win.  The Storm managed just six hits, but used six walks and three Javelina errors to their advantage.  Kristi Goins had two hits and scored two runs for the team.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 11 in the morning.
