Javelinas Take Two from Jets

Yvette Berlanga drove in five runs against Newman  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team got back on the winning track on Tuesday afternoon sweeping visiting Newman University 6-0 and 9-1 at Hubert Field. (game 1, game 2)

The Javelinas (21-9) dominated both ends of the doubleheader from start to finish and prevented the Lady Jets (0-17) from picking up their first victory of the season.

In the first game, senior pitcher Courtney Rigamonti (Victoria/Memorial HS) pitched her first shutout of the season allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out 10 batters.  She improved to 17-5 on the season with the victory.  In the second game, freshman Jessica Schneider (Flatonia/Schulenburg HS) allowed just five hits and one run while striking out two in a complete game victory.  It was her third win of the season.

The Javelinas had a number of hitting stars.  Junior Cassie Anderson (Splendora/Splendora HS) continued her torrid hitting by safely hitting in each game and extending her hitting streak to a school record 26 games.  She went 3-for-4 with three runs, three stolen bases and a triple in the first game and came back with a 1-for-2 performance with two runs, an RBI and two stolen bases in the second game.  She is now hitting .533 with 21 stolen bases on the season.

Freshman Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) had a fantastic day.  She went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s and a run scored in the first game.  In the second game, she went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and three RBI’s.  She drove in five runs in the doubleheader and now leads the team with eight doubles on the season.

Senior shortstop Meisha Patterson (Dumas/Dumas HS) snapped a hitting slump with a nice day.  She had two hits in each game going 4-for-6 for the day.  She scored two runs with a double and an RBI.

In the second game, Kaycee Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS), Christine Brumley (Waller/Waller HS) and Shaun Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS) each had strong performances.  Kaycee Bryan went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base.  Brumley added two hits, an RBI and a run scored while Shaun Bryan drove in three runs and had a double.

The Lady Jets tallied eight hits in the double header.  Amy Schneider had two of the team’s three hits in the first game.  Kari Dillon had a double in the second game and Brittanie Bockman drove in the team’s only run.  Killon took the loss in the first game while Allison Thummel was tagged with the loss in the second game.

The Javelinas are back in action this Friday when they travel to Lone Star Conference South Division rival Abilene Christian for a three-game series.
