Softball Splits with #22 Buffalos

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team played host to #22 West Texas A&M on Friday and split a doubleheader winning the first game 6-5 before losing the second game 7-1 at Hubert Field.  (Game 1, Game 2)

In the first game, the Javelinas (19-8, 5-3) fell behind on two occasions, but were able to come back in each instance.  The Buffalos (18-8, 4-4) scored two runs in the first inning and nearly scored more, but left the bases loaded.  The Hoggies scored three times on four hits in the bottom half of the first inning.

The Buffalos reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning when Kimberly LeComte smacked a three-run homer to make it 5-3.  In the bottom half of the inning, the Javelinas added an unearned run.  The Javs took the lead in the sixth inning when Ariel Lichtenberger (Alice/Alice HS) came through with a two-out, two-run single to give the team a 6-5 lead.

Javelina pitcher Courtney Rigamonti (Victoria/St. Joseph HS) retired the side in the seventh to earn her 16th win of the season.  She allowed four hits, five runs and nine walks while striking out six batters in seven innings.  The offense had 11 hits as Shaun Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS) led the way with a 3-for-3 performance while Melissa St. Clair (Garden City, KS/Garden City HS) and Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) each had two hits.

Marci Womack was tagged with the loss for the Buffs allowing 11 hits and six runs while striking out two batters.

In the second game, the Buffalos took advantage of 14 walks and scored runs in the fourth through seventh innings to grab a 7-1 win.  Dani Cougar swatted the only extra base hit of the game, a two-run homer.  Meghan Brown walked four times in the game and scored three runs.  Lindsey Wright picked up the win by pitching a complete game and allowing six hits, one unearned run and two walks while striking out 13 batters to improve to 9-2 on the season.

The Javelinas threatened to score in the fifth and sixth innings, but couldn’t mount a second come from behind win in the day.  The lone bright spot was Cassie Anderson (Splendora/Splendora HS) extending her hitting streak to 23 games as she had a single in each game.  She got on base with a bunt single in the seventh inning in the second game.

The two teams will finish up their series on Saturday with one game at 1:30.
