Javelinas Knock Off #19 Cardinals

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Less than a month after losing to Incarnate Word 13-6 at home, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team went to Sullivan Field and knocked off the 19th ranked team in the nation, 10-3 on Tuesday night.  (box score)

The Javelinas (8-13) had their bats working against the Cardinals (16-6) from start to finish.  The Hoggies put three runners on base in the first inning without scoring, but then batted around in the second inning scoring three runs.  Travis Earles (Houston/Cy-Falls HS) cracked a two-run double to cap off the inning.  In the fourth inning, Earles drove in another run with a two out single.

The Cardinals finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Trey Hogan drove in a run with a double.  The Javs came right back in the fifth scoring a run and it could have been more, but they left the bases loaded.  The Cards cut the deficit to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

In the eighth inning, the Cardinals added another run to pull to within 5-3.  Javelina pitcher Steven Hooker (Houston/Spring Woods HS) slammed the door on a potential Cardinal rally when he induced a double play to the first batter he faced.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Javelinas put the game away by scoring five runs, four unearned.  Philip Johnson (Malibu, CA/Malibu HS) drove in three runs with a bases loaded double to cap off the inning.  Hooker retired the side in the bottom of the ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season.

Earles led the Javelinas with a 4-for-6 performance that included three RBI’s, a double and a run scored.  Adrian Williams (Victoria/Memorial HS) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and two walks.  Brandon Rohr (Anaheim, CA/Orange Lutheran HS) had his best day in a Javelina uniform going 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI’s.  Johnson and Robert Cox (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) each had two hits.  Dan Rogers (Redwood City, CA/Woodside HS) started the game on the mound going 4.1 innings allowing four hits, two runs and three walks while striking out one to earn his second win of the season.  Hooker allowed one hit and struck out one to pick up the save.

The Cardinals had two players, Tyler Hicks and Hogan, each with two hits.  Paul Brancheau was tagged with the loss after lasting just 1.2 innings while allowing five hits, three runs and two walks.  The Cardinals also committed three errors while the Javs did not commit a single error.

The Javs are back in action on Friday at home against Lone Star Conference South Division rival Eastern New Mexico at 3 o’clock at Nolan Ryan Field.
