Softball Splits with TSU

Cassie Anderson drove in the winning run in Game 1 on Friday  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville and Tarleton State University softball teams split a pair of games on Friday night in the Lone Star Conference South Division opener for both squads.  The Javelinas (13-6, 1-1) won the first game 3-2 while the TexAnns (12-6, 1-1) won the second game 7-2 at Hubert Field.  (Game 1, Game 2)

Game 1
The Javelinas have made a habit of falling behind against their opponents and it was no different in the first game against the TexAnns.  Tarleton held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before the Hoggies rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the South Division opener.

The TexAnns took their initial lead of the game in the top of the third inning.  Julie Norris reached base with two outs, advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third.  She trotted home on Victoria Kelly’s single to centerfield.

The Hoggies tied the score in the fourth inning when Kaycee Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS) led off with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt.  She scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 1-1.

Starting pitchers Courtney Rigamonti (Victoria/St. Joseph HS) and her TSU counterpart Lauren Zearfoss cruised until the seventh inning.  In the top of the seventh, Nicole Cone crushed a 1-out homer to give the TexAnns the 2-1 lead.

In the bottom half of the seventh, Zearfoss retired one batter before Christine Brumley (Waller/Waller HS) hit a pinch-hit double down the rightfield line.  Suddenly, Zearfoss got a little wild hitting one batter and walking another to load the bases.  Dalia Marroquin (Brownsville/Porter HS) hit a slow roller back to the pitcher, but Kelli Sears (Floresville/Floresville HS) beat the throw home to tie the score.  Cassie Anderson (Splendora/Splendora HS) then flied out to left and Jasmine Ross (Camilla, GA/Camilla HS) beat the throw home to win the game.

Rigamonti earned her 10th win of the season by allowing five hits, two runs and no walks while striking out four batters.  Zearfoss dropped to 7-5 despite allowing just three hits, three runs and four walks while whiffing three.  Anderson had two hits for the Javelinas while Kelly had two safeties for the TexAnns.

Game 2
In the second game, the TexAnns jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.  They tagged Javelina starting pitcher Jessica Schneider (Flatonia/Schulenburg HS) for six runs in the first three innings and dropped her season record to 2-3.  Conversely, Julie Norris pitched beautifully for the visitors allowing four hits, no walks and just two unearned runs while striking out five to improve to 5-0 on the season.

TSU pounded out 10 hits in the ballgame with Tamra Bradley going 3-for-4 with three doubles and two runs batted in.  Kelly had two more hits for the squad while Cone had one hit and two runs scored.  Norris helped herself at the plate going 2-for-4 with a run scored.  April Gonzalez added to her season total for hit by pitches after getting beaned twice in the game.  She has been hit an extraordinary 15 times this season.

The Javelinas had four players with lone singles.  Kaycee Bryan and Ross scored the team’s two runs while Ariel Lichtenberger (Alice/Alice HS) had the only RBI.  Cassandra Hernandez (Harlingen/South HS) pitched well in relief allowing five hits, one run and no walks while striking out two in 4.0 innings of work.

The two teams finish up their series on Saturday with one game at 11 in the morning at Hubert Field.  Live stats are available through www.javelinaathletics.com.
