Javelinas Fall by One on the Road

  SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Despite coming back from a 10 point second half deficit at Incarnate Word, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team was a dealt a one-point loss, 73-72 on Saturday afternoon.

The Javelinas (3-1) trailed 59-49 with 10:02 left in the game against the Cardinals (3-2).  The Hoggies followed up with a 13-2 run to take a 62-61 lead with 5:45 remaining after Naquawn Lee’s (San Antonio/East Central HS) jumper.

The teams battled back-and-forth over the remainder of the game.  The Javelinas grabbed a 72-71 lead with 21 seconds left on a lay-up by Lee.  The Cardinals reclaimed the lead on two free throws by Pierce Caldwell with 10 seconds remaining and the Hoggies were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.

Senior forwards Flavio Milam (Ellison/Killeen HS) and Royce Gaye (Houston/Klein HS) led the Javelinas on offense and defense.  Milam led the team with 21 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two assists.  Gaye added 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor while making all seven of his free throw attempts.

The Javelinas shot 38.3 percent from the field, make 3-of-16 three-point attempts and were 23-of-37 from the foul line.  They forced 17 turnovers while committing only 13 as a team.

Caldwell led the Cardinals with 27 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor.  He went 5-of-7 from three-point land and was 8-for-8 from the foul line.  Tracy Robinson posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.  Kelcey Solomon chipped in 13 points off the bench.

The Cardinals shot 48.1 percent from the floor, made 6-of-13 three-pointers and were 17-of-21 at the foul line.

The Javelinas return home on Thursday night against Texas A&M-International for a 7 o’clock tip-off.  The game will be available to watch online at www.javelinaathletics.com.
