Hoggies Open Season with W

  LAREDO, TEXAS – A 15-0 second half run led the Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team to a season opening win at Texas A&M-International on Wednesday night, 70-58.  (box score)

A 17-2 run in the first half, gave the Javelinas (1-0) a 14-point lead with 5:53 left in the half.  The Dustdevils (0-1) closed the gap with 9-0 run before the Javs scored the final three points of the half to take a 33-25 lead into half time.

Early in the second half, the Javelinas kicked off their 15-0 run when Ryan Wallace (Spring/Tomball HS) drained a three-pointer with 17:17 left in the game.  The Hoggies held the Dustdevils scoreless over the next 4:51 and their lead ballooned to 20 points.

The lead reached 23 points when Brock Kimball (Ingleside/Ingleside HS) drilled a three-pointer with 10:42 left.

TAMIU inched back into the game over the next four minutes and pulled to within 61-50 with 6:24 remaining.  The Javelina defense held the Devils scoreless over the next three minutes and was able to hold onto the victory.

The Javelinas had four players score in double figures with Antwan Mullins (Katy/Cinco Ranch HS) leading the way with 13 points and six assists while making all six of his free throw attempts.  Royce Gaye (Houston/Klein HS) and Marcus Ford (Colorado Springs, CO/Lamar CC) each added 12 points while Wallace added 11 points and six boards while making 5-of-7 shots from the field.

The Hoggies shot 47.2 percent from the field, made 7-of-16 three-point attempts and were 13-of-15 from the foul line.  They committed only 15 turnovers while forcing 19 in the game.  They outscored TAMIU 18-7 in points off turnovers and 26-12 on points in the paint.

The Dustdevils were led by Christian Jones who had 12 points and six rebounds.  Bernard Burrell and Evan Matteson each added eight points off the bench.  They made 40.8 percent of their field goals, but were only 4-of-17 from three-point range.  They made 14-of-18 free throw attempts.

The Javelinas are back in action on Sunday afternoon at home against Texas Lutheran University at 2 o’clock.
