Javs Open Season on Right Foot

  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team picked up where they left off last season by defeating Lone Star Conference North Division rival East Central University, 81-57 on Sunday afternoon at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.  (box score)

The Javelinas (1-0) struggled from the field in the first half, but were scorching hot in the second half making 50 percent of their shots.  They outscored the Tigers (0-1) 26-8 over the final 10:45.

In the first half, the Hoggies built up a 30-19 lead with 5:56 remaining, but the Tigers the half with a nice run to cut the lead to 35-30.  Neither team shot well in the first half, although the Javelinas had an advantage from the three-point line by making three more than the Tigers.

In the second half, the Tigers pulled to within one point on two separate occasions, but were never able to take the lead.  The Hoggies finally wore down the visitors over the final 10 minutes of the game and won going away.

The Javelinas had five players score in double figures with Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) leading the way with 19 points, including five three-pointers.  Dyana Bullinger (Spring/Klein HS) notched a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds, five steals and four assists.  Point guard Kayla Naylor (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists.

The Javelinas shot 43.9 percent from the field for the game.  They made 12-of-28 three-point attempts and were 11-for-16 at the foul line.  They had 15 assists and only 16 turnovers.

The Tigers were led by the duo of Danielle Cox and Casi Rawls.  Cox had 18 points and eight rebounds while Rawls added 17 points and six boards.  The team shot 36.2 percent from the field, were 8-for-23 from three-point range and 7-for-11 at the line.  They grabbed seven more rebounds than the Javelinas, but committed 30 turnovers in the game.

The Javelinas are back in action on Friday at Central Missouri for a 7 o’clock tip-off.
