Volleyball Splits in San Antonio

  SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team snapped its six match losing streak on Saturday when they defeated St. Mary’s by a score of 26-24, 25-21, 25-13 after dropping an earlier match to Incarnate Word 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 15-9.  (IWU box score)

The Javelinas (10-9) downed the Rattlers (3-16) thanks to an outstanding effort by senior Kristin Chancellor (Bellville/Bellville HS).  She pounded out a match high 11 kills and posted a .714 attack for the Hoggies.  Adina Gray (Corpus Christi/Flour Bluff HS) chipped in with 10 kills while Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) led the defense with 21 digs.  Setters Tara Grier (Poth/Poth HS) and Kirby Krueger (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) each had solid matches.  Grier had 17 assists, 12 digs and seven kills while Krueger had 21 assists.  The Javs posted a .243 attack in the match.

The Rattlers were led by Mallory Moeller and Kirsten Chapman.  Moeller had six kills and six blocks while Chapman led the team with eight kills and a .412 attack.  Kori McCarver and Allie Murray combined for 32 assists.

In an earlier match, the Javs dropped a tough five setter to Incarnate Word.  Sophomore Jess Morris (Goliad/Goliad HS) had the best match of her career with 21 kills, 11 digs and a .390 attack.  Chancellor added 10 kills and four blocks while Krueger dished out 30 assists and had 14 digs.  Grier just missed a triple-double with 20 assists, 15 digs and eight kills.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals (16-5) were just a little bit better than the Hoggies.  Edie Weise pounded out 26 kills, had five blocks and a .400 attack.  Nicole Morfin added 16 kills, 14 digs and a .429 attack.  Sarah Nordman directed the attack with 57 assists.  Spencer Ladd led the team with 25 digs.  Overall, the Cardinals attacked at a .269 rate.

The Javelinas are back in action on Thursday, October 8 against Cameron on “Dig Pink” Night at the Kingsville Hampton Inn Court at 7 o’clock.
