Johnson Leads Hogs to Win

Clyde Johnson scored 22 points on Wednesday night  PORTALES, NEW MEXICO – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team continued its string of excellent play on the road on Wednesday night.  Senior forward Clyde Johnson (San Antonio/Converse Judson HS) fired in a game high 22 points to lead the Javelinas to a 70-60 win over Lone Star Conference South Division rival Eastern New Mexico University. The Javelinas (13-6, 3-1) took the lead over the Greyhounds (4-15, 0-4) for the first time on a dunk by Chip Jones (Fort Worth/Univ. of Houston) just four minutes into the game and never trailed.  In the first half, the Javs never led by more than six points, but only allowed ENMU to tie the score once and took a 27-25 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Greyhounds tied the score on their first possession, but the Javelinas reclaimed the lead on their next possession when Johnson scored on a lay-up.  Over the remainder of the game, the Hogs gradually built up their lead and never allowed Eastern New Mexico to score more than four points in a row.
The Javelinas closed out the game by outscoring the Greyhounds 12-6 in the final 2:45.  They went 4-for-4 at the foul line and finished the game making 7-of-8 free throws after struggling from the line for most of the season.

The Javelinas shot 52.5 percent from the field for the game despite only making 1-of-10 three-point attempts.  Johnson went 10-for-17 from the field with six rebounds.  Junior Robert Williams (Dallas/Kimball HS) added 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and six rebounds.  Jones came off the bench to score 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting and added two blocks.  Senior point guard Wendell Mulkey (San Antonio/East Central HS) dished out nine assists and chipped in with six points and six rebounds.  The Javs outrebounded the Greyhounds by a 33-30 margin.

The Greyhounds shot 42.9 percent from the field, made 3-of-10 three-pointers and were 9-of-13 from the foul line.  Equs Darby led the team with 17 points and five rebounds.  Dannon Wafer added 14 points, seven boards and four steals.  Justin Reynolds and Aaron King chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively.  The Greyhounds forced 13 turnovers while committing only 10 of their own.

 The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday night at 7 o’clock against LSC South rival West Texas A&M in the Steinke Center.  The game can be watched and listened to online by clicking on the live broadcasts link on www.javelinaathletics.com.
