Kingsville – The St. Mary’s Rattlers ended the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas unbeaten record at home, sweeping them 2-0 and 3-2 at Hubert Field.
The losses dropped A&M-Kingsville to 10-12 while St. Mary’s improved to 20-4.
After being shutout in the first game, the Javelinas broke out quickly in game two, scoring two runs on three hits in the opening inning.
Cassie Anderson led off with a single, Meisha Patterson had an infield single and with two outs Julia Canales (H.M. King) doubled off the left field wall to give the Javelinas the 2-0 lead.
But the Rattlers got a run in the second, one in the fourth and an unearned run for the game winner in the top of the seventh.
The Javelinas had scoring chances, but left a runner at second with one out in the second and had a runner at third with just one out in the fourth and the sixth, but couldn’t score.
In game one the Javelina offense was shutdown by All-American pitcher Malissa Magee who held A&M-Kingsville to just two hits while striking out 15 to improve to 15-2 on the season.
Courtney Rigamonti pitched well for A&M-Kingsville, allowing only two runs on six hits while striking out three.
The game was scoreless until the Rattlers scored one in the fourth and one in the fifth for the margin of victory.
The Javelinas did not pick up a hit until the fifth. After two outs, Kristin Schumann walked and Jessika Cantu singled to center, but the Javelinas left them stranded.
In the sixth Cassie Anderson reached on a bunt single and advanced to single on a bunt, but couldn’t advance.
A&M-Kingsville travels to Canyon this weekend to take on West Texas A&M in a three-game Lone Star Conference series.
