KINGSVILLE – Courtney Rigamonti (Victoria St. Joseph’s) and Jessika Cantu (Tuloso-Midway) combined to allow no earned run over 12 innings, and to drive in five runs as the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas put an end to their five-game home losing streak with a doubleheader sweep of the Newman University Jets, 6-3 and 8-0.
With the sweep the Javelinas improved to 14-16 on the season while the Jets dropped to 4-14.
“We finally decided to step up and get some hits,” head coach Blake Miller said. “The big thing is to carry this into tomorrow and make it a trend and then the pressure goes away. We’ll become that aggressive team that scores a lot of runs.”
The Javelinas were aggressive on the bases, stealing eight times including six in the second game.
Meisha Patterson had three stolen bases on the day while Cassie Anderson and Jasmine Ross each had two.
Anderson had a big day with three hits in five at bats, scored four runs and drove in a run.
“That’s how I like to coach,” Miller said. “We’re going to run and run and run. It’s fun to play and it’s fun to watch.”
In game one, Rigamonti picked up the win for the Javelinas to improve to 9-10. In her third complete game in as many days, she allowed no earned runs while striking out four and walking none.
After Newman took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth, the Javelinas immediately responded and put up four runs in the bottom half of the inning. A&M-Kingsville loaded the bases with no outs and Rigamonti tied the game on a single to left field that scored Anderson. Cantu then came up and knocked in a double to right field that brought in Julia Canales and Shaun Bryan. Rigamonti later scored on a wild pitch that put the Javelinas up, 4-1.
The Jets cut the lead to one run, 4-3, in the top of the fifth. Both runs came with two outs on a Javelina error that allowed Kelie Ramirez and Jennifer Stasiewicz to score for Newman.
Like they did the previous inning, the Javelinas answered right back in their half of the inning putting up two runs themselves. Anderson singled to right field to get on base and scored on an error after Bryan singled through the left side. Bryan later scored to make it 6-3 on a Rigamonti sacrifice fly to center field.
In the second game, Cantu got the win for A&M-Kingsville to go to 5-4. In five innings of work she allowed no runs while striking out three and walking one.
The Javelinas broke a scoreless tie with a five-run fifth inning. Ariel Lichtenberger (Alice) led off the inning with a single through the left side before coming home on a Patterson double through the left side of the infield to put A&M-Kingsville up 1-0. Anderson followed that up with a single through the right side to plate Patterson. The Javelinas then loaded the bases with Anderson coming home on a wild pitch that made it 3-0. A Rigamonti sacrifice fly to left field then brought in Bryan and a Krisin Schumann (Corpus Christi Carroll) single through the left side plated Julia Canales (H.M. King) to cap the five-run rally.
The Javelinas added three more runs in the sixth to have the game called.
Patterson and Ross scored on an error before Bryan singled in Anderson to make it 8-0 and end the game.
The Javelinas will be in Laredo Tuesday for a doubleheader against the Texas A&M-International Dustdevils beginning at 3 p.m.
