Hogs Battle Down To The Wire, But Fall 79-76

San Angelo -- The Javelinas made their final three shots from the floor in the final minute, but turned the ball over in the final seconds and lost a chance to tie the game in falling to Angelo State 79-76 in San Angelo.
The loss dropped the Javelinas to 14-7 overall and 3-3 while the Rams improved to an identical 14-7 and 3-3 mark.
Reggie Love, who made 4 of 8 3-point shots, led the Javelinas with 19 points, Juan Lanauze had 15, Stephen Story came off the bench to score 14 and point guard Wendell Mulkey had six points, 14 assists and two steals.
The Hogs trailed by as many as nine points in the first half and still trailed 36-33 at the half.
But A&M-Kingsville controlled the first 10 minutes of the second half, holding a 54-49 lead with 10:54 left in the game.
There were four lead changes and four ties over the final 10 minutes.
The key play came with just over a minute to go when Quinn Barfield scored a rebound basket and hit a free throw to give ASU a 74-70 lead.
The Hogs would hit their next three shots from the field, two by Juan Lanauze and another by Clyde Johnson to stay in the game.
But the Rams made four consecutive free throws to keep the Hogs at bay.
A&M-Kingsville's last chance came when the Rams finally missed a free throw with six seconds left, but after grabbing the rebound, the Hogs turned the ball over before getting a shot off.
The Javelinas made 17 of 22 free throws and turned the ball over only nine times, but shot just 44 percent from the floor.  Angelo State shot nearly 60 percent from the floor and made 7 of 13 3-ponit shots.
The Javelinas and Rams are now tied for third place in the LSC South.  The Hogs travel to Eastern New Mexico Saturday.
