Javelina Softball Sweeps Regional Foe Regis

Kingsville – Sophomore Shaun Bryan smacked a three-run home run in the opener and Meisha Patterson capped three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out, two-run single in the nightcap as the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas swept regional foe Regis 3-2 and 4-3 at Hubert Field.

The wins improved the Javelinas’ record to 7-4 including a perfect 4-0 at home.

Regis, which has been to the NCAA Tournament four of the last eight years, fell to 5-4.

Courtney Rigamonti (Victoria St. Joseph’s) got the victory in the first game, improving to 4-3 on the season.

She allowed just two runs on four hits while striking out six and walking none. Rigamonti had a shutout until allowing a two-run home run in the seventh.

The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the fifth. Jasmine Ross led off the inning with a single and one out later Cassie Anderson singled. Then with two outs, Bryan belted a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall. It was the Javelinas’ first home run of the season and Bryan’s first home run of her collegiate career.

In the nightcap, freshman Jessika Cantu (Tuloso-Midway) hung on to get the victory. She allowed 10 hits, but just two earned runs, stranded eight runners and got out of a bases loaded, one-out jam with a game ending double play in the top of the seventh. The win improved her record to 3-1.

Down 3-1 in the fifth, Janay Gonzalez (Alice) and Jasmine Ross delivered one-out singles. They both advanced on a wild pitch and Cassie Anderson drove in a run with a fielder’s choice to cut the lead to one.

On a 3-2 pitch with two outs, Patterson singled up the middle to drive in Anderson and Ariel Lichtenberger (Alice) to give the Javelinas a 4-3 lead.

Cantu retired the Rangers in order in the sixth, but was faced with a one-out bases loaded situation in the seventh, but induced Jacqueleen Martinez to hit into a pitcher, to catcher to first base double-play to end the game.
