KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team was in the spirit of giving on Saturday night with a season high 28 assists en route to an 86-68 victory over Lone Star Conference North Division rival Cameron University at the Steinke Center. (box score)
The Javelinas (5-3) trailed for a total of 18 seconds a game in which their offense executed the best it has all season. Senior point guard Wendell Mulkey (San Antonio/East Central HS) dished off a season high 12 assists, many of which found Adan Montalvo (La Joya/La Joya HS) and Clyde Johnson (San Antonio/Converse Judson HS) on the receiving end. Montalvo drained 4-of-6 three-point attempts and Johnson was 9-of-12 from the field, including 4-for-7 from three-point range.
The Javelinas took a 12-point lead into halftime and held a double-digit lead for all but 25 seconds of the second half. The Hogs shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the first half and upped that mark to 69.2 percent in the second half. They finished the game 33-of-50 from the floor, including a season best 10-for-20 performance from outside the three-point arc.
The Javelina offense dished off 28 assists and more impressively, only committed 14 turnovers. The offense struggled in just one area, free throws, where they made only 10-of-20 attempts.
The Aggies (2-3) had three players score in double figures. Dylan Gilliam poured in 19 points off the bench to lead the team. Dave Smith added 16 points making 4-of-5 three-pointers while Kallan Glasgow chipped in with 13 points. Jamaar Burke led the team with nine rebounds and three steals. The team shot 47.2 percent from the floor, were 10-for-20 from three-point range and 8-of-16 from the foul line.
The Javelinas were led by Johnson’s career high 24 points, five points and three steals. Chip Jones (Fort Worth/Univ. of Houston) added 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting off the bench. Montalvo finished with 12 points, five assists, three steals and no turnovers. Adam Morris (Goliad/Goliad HS) added a season high 11 points off the bench. Robert Williams (Dallas/Kimball HS) added nine points, seven boards and five assists.
The Javs are back in action on Saturday at LSC North rival Texas A&M-Commerce at 9 o’clock. The game was originally scheduled for 4 o’clock, but was moved back due to Commerce’s graduation.
