Javelinas Saddled with Loss

Adam Morris made 3 three-pointers against Incarnate Word  SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – After winning six of seven games, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team saw its luck run out at University of the Incarnate Word on Tuesday night falling 96-67. (box score)

The Javelinas (6-4) led briefly at the beginning of the game, but a 17-3 run by the Cardinals (6-2) late in the first half gave them a lead they would not relinquish.  In the second half, the Javs closed to within 11 points on an Adam Morris (Goliad/Goliad HS) three-pointer with 11:27 to play, but would never cut the lead to single digits.

The Cardinals played well in all facets of the game.  They shot over 50 percent from the field and knocked down 21-of-24 free throw attempts.  They dished out 19 assists and turned the ball over just seven times and out rebounded the Javs by a 44-37 margin.  On defense, the Cards limited the Hogs to a season low 30.4 shooting percentage.

The Javs were led in scoring by Morris and Chip Jones (Fort Worth/U. of Houston).  Morris contributed 11 points while making 3-of-6 three-point attempts and Jones led the way with 13 points, six boards and a 5-for-5 performance at the foul line.  Another sub, Royce Gaye (Houston/Klein HS), added eight points, four rebounds and three assists.  Point guard Wendell Mulkey (San Antonio/East Central HS) led the team with five assists while committing just one turnover.

The Cards were led by Jawan Bailey’s 21 points and seven rebounds.  Pierce Caldwell added 20 points, six rebounds and four assists off the bench.  Garrett Bell contributed 13 points and a game high nine rebounds.  Eric Nuncio dished out a game high six assists for the victors.

The Javelinas will not return to the court again until December 30 when they host Huston-Tillotson at 7 o’clock.
