Hogs Drop Bulldogs

Flavio Milam had 15 points on Saturday  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – A close first half turned quickly in the second half when the Texas A&M-Kingsville pressure defense took its toll on visiting Texas Lutheran University.  The Javelinas cruised to the 82-71 victory in men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon. (box score)
The Bulldogs (0-1) gave the Javelinas (1-2) everything they could handle for 20 minutes.  The Hogs built up a 10 point lead late in the half, but Michael Flores kept TLU in the game by scoring seven straight points at the end of the half to close the gap to 39-34.
The second half began with the Bulldogs scoring on their first possession, but then the Javelinas put things into high gear.  A 12-0 run was punctuated by a Chip Jones (Fort Worth/Univ. of Houston) slam dunk with 16:13 to play.  After the teams traded buckets, the Hogs went on an 11-2 run and eventually led by 25 points with 9:10 remaining.  The Bulldogs were able to make the score more respectable down the stretch, but the game was never in doubt in the final minutes.
The Javelinas dominated play inside the paint as they outscored TLU by a 46-24 margin and out rebounded the visitors 33-19..  Robert Williams (Dallas/Kimball HS) led the way with 23 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor, all inside the paint.  Off the bench, Jones added 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting on the inside in just 10 minutes of action.
The Hogs shot 57.1 percent from the floor for the game and were 14-of-18 at the foul line, an area they struggled at in the first two games of the season.  Junior Flavio Milam (Killeen/Ellison HS) had his best game in the blue and white scoring 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting while adding three assists.  Clyde Johnson (San Antonio/Converse Judson HS) added 10 points and eight rebounds.  Point guard Wendell Mulkey (San Antonio/East Central HS) played sparingly in the first half due to foul trouble, but still managed to finish with eight assists and three steals.
The Bulldogs were led by Josh Scott’s 17 points.  He went 4-for-6 from the floor and was 9-of-11 at the charity stripe.  Tyler Wanek was perfect from the field and the foul line while adding 11 points.  TLU shot 51.1 percent from the floor and were 23-of-31 from the foul line.
The Javelinas will now take their first road trip of the season as they travel to St. Mary’s University on Tuesday night.  Tip-off is at 7:30 and the game can be listened to online at www.teamline.cc/teampage?teamcode=7836.
