Tigers Top Javelinas

Virginia Hernandez  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team may find themselves on the outside looking in when the Lone Star Conference Playoffs roll around.  The Javelinas dropped a three set match to visiting East Central University on Thursday night at the Steinke Center dropping their LSC record to 3-7 on the season. The Tigers (9-17, 3-4) controlled play for most of the match as they won 25-19, 25-18, 25-21.  Holly Hicks was the player of the match as she had 11 kills, 16 assists, six digs and three blocks.  As a team, the Tigers attacked at a .254 rate as Katy Fields led the way with 12 kills and a .345 attack.  Jacqueline Sparks had a double-double with 10 kills and 14 assists.  Megan Kimak led the defense with 18 digs while Shayla May led the offense with 17 assists.
The Javelinas (7-15, 3-7) had only 27 kills in the match and a .135 attack.  Senior Shaday Smith (Houston/Jones HS) led the team with seven kills and a .286 attack.  Junior Kirby Krueger (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) had 10 assists while sophomore Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) contributed 14 digs.
The team plays its final home match of the season on Saturday at 2 o’clock against Southeastern Oklahoma.  Smith is the team’s lone senior and will be honored following the match.
