Kingsville – Western Oregon outscored Texas A&M-Kingsville 19-0 in the second half in rallying to beat the Javelinas 22-14 at Javelina Stadium.
Western Oregon improved to 3-0 while the Javelinas fell 0-3.
Wolves running back Ben Kuenzi ran for 108 yards and quarterback Mark Thorson completed 18 of 34 passes for 174 yards.
The Javelinas out-gained the Wolves 326 to 268, but the Hogs were just 5 of 16 on third downs, fumbled five times and lost two of those.
Redshirt freshman quarterback David Garza (Laredo United) threw for a career high 226 yards, completing 14 of 25 passes and throwing for one touchdown while senior running back Raymorris Miller gained 50 yards on 13 carries with one score. Redshirt freshman receiver Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop) caught three passes for 96 yards and sophomore receiver Ryan Richardson (Edinburg Economedes) caught three passes for 79 yards and a score.
After leading 14-3 at the half, the Javelinas controlled the ball for 10 ½ minutes in the third quarter, but were outscored 12-0 as the Wolves grabbed a 15-14 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The Javelinas drove 31 yards on the first drive of the second half, but were stopped on fourth and one from the Wolf 30-yard line.
Three possessions later, Western Oregon put together a nine-play, 84-yard drive that culminated in an eight run touchdown run by Tyler Wilson. The Wolves gained 67 of their 84 yards on that drive on the ground.
The Javelinas failed to convert a third and three on their own 25-yard line and Western Oregon sophomore Shaun Kauleinamoku returned the ensuing punt 59 yards for a touchdown to give the Wolves their first lead of the game.
The Wolves then put the game away in the fourth quarter when Thorson threw a 34 yard touchdown pass Isiah Smith on third and 16 with 4:50 left in the game.
After rushing for just over 100 yards in the first two games combined, the Javelinas rumbled for 40 yards on their first drive of the game, capped by a 13-yard touchdown run by senior running back Raymorris Miller (Houston Elsik).
It gave A&M-Kingsville their first lead of the game at 7-0.
Western Oregon had first and goal at the Javelina 10-yard line early in the second quarter, but the Javelina defense held and the Wolves had to settle for a 32-yard field goal by Bruce Voges.
The Wolves recovered a Garza fumble at the Javelina 32-yard line with 1:31 left in the half, but again the defense stiffened and Voges missed a 45-yard field goal with 31 seconds left.
On the next play from scrimmage, Ryan Richardson (Edinburg Economedes) turned a short pass from Garza into a 72 yard touchdown to give the Javelinas a 14-3 lead at halftime.
A&M-Kingsville out-gained the Wolves 209 to 119 in the first half with Garza completing 9 of 16 passes for 161 yards.
