Javelinas Rally, Earn LSC Sweep

   KINGSVILLE –    The Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas rallied from a 5-0 deficit in game two to defeat West Texas A&M 13-5 and earn a sweep in the Lone Star Conference South Division opener.

   The Javelinas won game one behind Nora Aguilar’s ninth complete game 6-2.

   Texas A&M-Kingsville is now 16-7 while West Texas A&M falls to 5-11.

   West Texas A&M scored five runs in the top of the second to grab a 5-0 lead, but the Javelinas struck right back, scoring six runs in the bottom of the inning to regain command.

   Ma’lia Guerra (Falfurrias) drove in the first run with a pinch-hit single, Sally Lozano (Kingsville) followed with another run scoring single, Joanna Dorado drove in the third run with a ground out, Megan Hall followed with another run scoring single and Julia Canales (Kingsville) capped the inning with a two-run triple.

   Natalie Jones came on in relief for the Javelinas and allowed only six hits and no earned runs in 4 2/3 innings to earn and victory and improved to 7-4.

   The Javelina offense scored in every inning from the second through the sixth to end the game with a run-rule victory.

   Guerra and Lozano each finished with three hits while Dorado, Quesha Torres, Canales and Kristin Schumann all added two hits apiece.

            In game one, Aguilar (Harlingen) improved her record to 8-3 giving up five hits and two runs while striking out 10 and walking three.

            Andrea Renteria took the loss for the Lady Buffs and fell to 1-3. She pitched five innings giving up nine hits and six runs. She also walked five and struck out three.

            Cassie Anderson, Torres and Canales each had two hits.

            The Javelinas took an early first inning lead when Anderson led off with a single and later scored on an error.

            In the top of the second, A&M-Kingsville added three more runs to make it 4-0. Dorado hit a double that brought in Anderson and Shaun Bryan and later scored on a Torres single.

            West Texas A&M cut the lead in half with one swing of the bat in the sixth inning. Kelsi Jensen led off the inning with a double to right center. Brooke Guidry followed that up with a home run that made the score 4-2.

            The Javelinas immediately put the lead back to four, 6-2, in the bottom of the inning. Megan Hall led off with a double and pinch runner Ma’lia Guerra advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on another. Torres later scored on a Courtney Rigamonti groundout.

            The Javelinas host another doubleheader against the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
