Abilene – The nationally ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team swept defending champion and preseason Lone Star Conference South Division favorite Abilene Christian Saturday to take 3 out of 4 in the weekend series.
The 19th ranked Javelinas beat the Wildcats 8-4 and 9-2 to improve to 21-8 overall and 7-1 in LSC play. Abilene Christian is now 13-11 and 3-5.
The Javelinas got a complete game performance from Nora Aguilar in game two while Natalie Jones earned the win in the opener with Aguilar coming on in relief.
Aguilar through a complete game 7-hitter, striking out 8 and walking just one to improve to 11-4.
Jones worked the first 5 2/3 innings, allowing 7 hits and 3 earned
runs to improve to 9-4. Aguilar came on to work the final 1 1/3
innings and did not allow a hit.
The foursome of Cassie Anderson, Quesha Torres, Joanna Dorado and
Sally Lozano combined for 15 hits, 5 doubles and 8 RBI in the twinbill
sweep.
Torres also improved her hitting streak to nine games.
In game one the Javelinas exploded for 5 runs in the third to take
control of the game.
The key hits in the inning were a 2-run double by Dorado and a 2-run
home run by Megan Hall.
ACU cut the lead to 5-4 after 5 innings, but the Javelinas put the
game away with 3 runs after two outs in the sixth.
Lozano doubled to drive in the first run with a double, Dorado had a
run scoring triple and Hall drove in the third run with a single.
In game two the Javelinas trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth, but
scored 4 in the fourth and fifth innings.
The four runs in the fourth came despite the Javelinas getting just
one hit in the inning, that coming on a run scoring single by Jones.
In the fifth, Torres and Jones had the key hits with run scoring
singles.
The Javelinas return to action Wednesday when they host Houston
Baptist in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
