KINGSVILLE – The Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas got a complete-game effort from Nora Aguilar to win game one, and a two-out tie breaking hit in the sixth inning by Julia Canales (Kingsville) to sweep a doubleheader from #7 Incarnate Word 2-1 and the second game 6-4.

The Javelinas combined to out hit the Cardinals 19 to nine including a season-high 12 hits in the second game.

The Javelinas took three games of the four-game series.

The Javelinas’ record now stands at 5-3 while the Cardinals fell to 3-6.

The Javelinas took game one of the doubleheader on the arm of Aguilar. She pitched her second straight complete game and extended her personal scoreless inning streak to 13 1/3 innings before surrendering a run in the seventh inning. She allowed one run, four hits, gave up a walk and struck out four and improved her record to 2-1. Both her wins came in the series.

Melissa Perez pitched a complete game for Incarnate Word giving up seven hits, two runs, allowed two walks and recorded six strikeouts but took the loss to drop her record to 1-4.

Quesha Torres went two-for-three with an RBI for the Javelinas. Kristin Schumann also had an RBI for A&M-Kingsville.

The Javelinas took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning as Canales reached on a one-out fielder’s choice, moved to second on a wild pitch and was brought in by a Kristin Schumann single.

The Javelinas added a run in the top of the fifth when Sally Lozano hit a leadoff single and Anderson reached on an error. Megan Hall walked to load the bases with Torres driving in the second run with a single to bring in Lozano.

The Cardinals threatened to tie the score in the top of the seventh after Aguilar hit Ashley Hinojosa with a pitch with one out and Cece Duron doubled. A Becky Moritz groundout scored Serena Smitham who had come in to pinch run for Hinojosa before Aguilar was able to get the final out to seal the win for A&M-Kingsville.

In game two, the Javelinas broke a 4-4 tie with four runs in the sixth inning.

Five Javelinas had multi-hit games as Canales had three RBI and Schumann brought in two runs.

Natalie Jones was the winning pitcher in the second game pitching 4 1/3 innings in relief, allowing four hits, one run, allowed a walk and had three strikeouts.

Monica Gutierrez took the loss for Incarnate Word going three innings and allowing six hits, four runs, three walks with one strikeout.

The Cardinals were able to jump to an early 1-0 lead off a lead off triple by Allison Britt and a sac bunt from Amanda Mayfield.

Several Javelina errors helped Incarnate Word extend their lead to 3-0 in the third. Two errors allowed both Britt and Mayfield to reach with Britt coming around on a wild pitch. Perez doubled in Mayfield for the Cardinal’s third run.

A&M-Kingsville answered in the bottom of the inning and took the lead 4-3 on a rally that included six straight hits.

The inning started off with back-to-back triples from Lozano and Anderson, but Anderson was thrown out at home trying to extend her hit into a home run. Joanna Dorado doubled, Megan Hall singled, Torres knocked a double that scored Dorado, and Canales brought in pinch runner Margret Monsivais with a single to tie the game at 3-3. Jones drove in the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice to give the Javelinas a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Jones was able to get out of one-out bases loaded jam to protect the one run lead when she forced Hinojosa to pop up and got a groundout from Stacy Segner.

The Cardinals were able to tie the game in the sixth with a quick two-out rally when Michelle Luna tripled and was brought in by a run-scoring single by Britt.

The Javelinas took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning when Canales got a two-out, bases loaded hit that brought in Dorado and Lozano to give A&M-Kingsville a 6-4 lead. The rally continued as Schumann brought in Canales and Hall with a single up the middle to take an 8-4 lead.
