KINGSVILLE-- The Texas A&M- Kingsville men’s basketball team lost their second consecutive last second decision at home, falling to West Texas A&M 65-63.
The Javelinas had the final possession, but Remi Yusuf missed a short jumper and time expired before Bobby Pandy could get a shot off after grabbing the offensive rebound.
The loss dropped the Javelinas to 14-5 overall and 1-3 in the Lone Star Conference South Division.
West Texas A&M won for the fifth time in the last games and improved to 12-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
“It was another close one at home,” Javelina head coach Pete Peterson said. “That’s how it is in this conference. We just made too many mistakes. We just couldn’t get the shots to drop. We don’t really have time to think about it, we’ve got Eastern coming on Saturday.”
Yusuf and Pandy each had 13 point to lead the Javelinas. Kevin Green had 14 point to lead West Texas A&M.
Stephen Story connected with a three-pointer to cut the Buffalo lead to one, 64-63 with 14.8 seconds to play.
The Javelinas then fouled Green who missed the first free throw, but made the second to give West Texas A&M the two-point lead and set up the final possession.
“We knew it was going to be a grinder,” Peterson said. “It was 38 minutes until they finally broke last year and we had a chance to tie or win it tonight. We’ve got to look at offensively what we’re doing.”
West Texas A&M shot just under 49 percent for the game and nearly 53 percent in the second half. The Hogs made just 37 percent of their shots and were out-rebounded 37-31.
The Javelinas forced 23 turnovers, but were out-scored at the free throw line 20-13.
Things got interesting when the Javelinas took possession on an out-of-bounds pass with a little over 5:40 to play. Yusuf hit two more free throws with 5:38 to play to put the Hogs down 56-53.
Damien Lolar took the ball right back for West Texas and hit a lay-up to make it 58-53.
Then Yusuf scored on a lay-up and made a free throw to cut the lead to two, 58-56, but West Texas A&M’s Pierre Barlow hit consecutive free throws to give the Buffaloes a 60-56 advantage. Huckaby came back and hit a driving lay-up with under a minute left to cut the lead to two.
A pair of free throws put the Hogs back in the hole 64-60 with only 26 seconds to play.
The Buffaloes led 33-26 at the half and opened the second half with Chris Hinz hitting on a lay-up to put West Texas up by nine.
Yusuf and Ralph Davis got the crowd fired up with a dunk followed by a steal by Yusuf that turned into a dunk to put the Hogs down by only two for the first time since the early stages of the first half.
Andre Hill quieted the crowd for the Buffaloes with a dunk of his own but only momentarily before Pandy hit a lay-up followed by another from Yusuf. After the free throw the Javelinas were down by only one point, 41-40. Pandy put the Hogs ahead for the first time all-game with a jumper with a little over 15 minutes to play. Then Huckaby sent the crowd into an explosion of roars with his dunk to put the Javelinas up 44-41.
Kia Griffin’s three-pointer put the Hogs ahead 47-45 with 12:46 to play. Hill put the Buffaloes back ahead 49-48 with a little over 11 minutes to play in regulation. The two teams exchanged shots for the next five minutes with West Texas still leading 53-49 before Kevin Green connected to put the Buffaloes ahead 56-49.
West Texas A&M’s Kevin Green opened the game with a three-pointer but the Javelinas fired right back with a bucket from Bobby Pandy. The Buffaloes hit two straight shots to take a 7-2 lead a little less than two minutes into the first half. The lead extended to 9-2 with another two-point basket from Green.
Remi Yusuf broke-up the Buffalo run when he connected for a lay-up on the Javelinas following possession and hit a free throw. The Buffalo lead continued to shrink for the when Pandy hit a jumper to cut the lead to 10-7.
Rickey Huckaby cut the lead to 14-10 after hitting a jumper with just over 13:23 to play. The Javelinas would score again when Wendell Mulkey found Bobby Pandy for a lay-up to make the score 16-12. Things started getting close when Eddie Lopez hit a three-pointer to make the game 18-15 with 11:12 left on the clock.
Pandy added two more points with consecutive free throws with 8:08 remaining in the first half to bring the Hogs within four at 21-17. But the Buffaloes began to take hold of the game when Mike Baskerville hit a three-point shot with less than five minutes to go. Yusuf came right back with a three-pointer just after Baskerville’s shot.
With under two minutes before halftime Dominick Jones connected for a deuce to cut the West Texas lead to 31-24. Griffin hit on another shot with just under one minute left to put the Javelinas down by seven 33-26 at halftime.
