Javelinas Can't Hold Late Lead In 69-64 Defeat

   Kingsville – Sandra Maldonado came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points, but she was the only Javelina in double figures as Texas A&M-Kingsville lost at home to East Central 64-59.  Click here for stats.

   The loss dropped the Javelinas to 3-3 while the   Tigers improved to 4-1.

   Thomisha White, Dyana Bullinger and Kayla Naylor (Calallen) each had eight points apiece for the Javelinas.

   Lacey Goldwire led the Tigers with 25 points.

   The Javelinas came out on fire to start the second half, scoring the first seven points to grab a 41-34 lead.       

   LaKeisha Jones scored four of the Javelinas’ seven points during the first two minutes.  A&M-Kingsville hit its first three shots to start the half.

   The Javelinas were still up seven, 51-45 with 11:47 left in the second half, but the Tigers scored 7 of the next 8 points to tie the game at 52.

   The Javelinas led 59-58 with three and a half minutes left to play, but East Central went on an 8-1 run to grab a 66-59 lead with 30 seconds remaining.

   Hyland used a rotation of five players substituting at a time for most of the game.

   The strategy worked well as the Javelina bench out-scored the Tiger bench 34 to 7.

   But East Central’s starters out-scored the A&M-Kingsville starters 62-30.

   There were six lead changes and five ties in the first 20 minutes as the two teams went into the halftime break tied at 34.

   East Central scored the first five points of the game and built their lead to seven, 16-9.

   The Javelinas scored seven straight points on baskets by Naylor, Bullinger and Maldonado to tie the game at 16.

   Again East Central went on a roll and was back up by five, 26-21 with 7:36 left in the half.

   The Javelinas then put together an 11-2 run with Naylor scoring six of those points to give A&M-Kingsville their biggest lead of the half, 32-28.

   East Central scored six of the final eight points of the half to tie the game.

   Naylor had nine points and Maldonado eight points in the first half to key a Javelina bench that outscored the East Central reserves 23-5 over the first 20 minutes.
