Javelinas sweep St. Mary's

KINGSVILLE – A month after being swept on the road by the St. Mary’s Rattlers, the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas returned the favor by sweeping the Rattlers 30-21, 30-24 and 30-27.
The Javelinas now stand at 13-11 on the season.
“We clinched the winning season, but I’m not done yet and I don’t think our kids are either,” coach Shannon Alvarado said. “It’s definitely a good step for this program bur we’re hungry for Saturday and hopefully we can continue winning.”
St. Mary’s saw their record fall to 14-15.
Sha Tramble led the team in kills with 17 and Heidi Scheopner had 10.
Scheopner led the A&M-Kingsville in assists with 24 while Kirby Krueger had 13.
Tara Grier led the Javelinas in digs with 21. Scheopner had 17, Virginia Hernandez had 15 and Krueger had 13 digs.
The Javelinas led throughout much of game one and, after a late timeout, went on a 7-2 run to put the game away.
“We just try to stop momentum,” Alvarado said. “During timeouts, we just try to refocus and do what we have to do to get out there and play.”
Game two started close until the Javelinas opened up a 23-16 lead. The Rattlers rallied to close the gap, 26-24, but A&M-Kingsville scored the last four points of the game to take the 2-0 advantage.
St. Mary’s started game three strong by taking an early 7-3 lead. Again, the Javelinas came out strong after a timeout and went on a 25-14 run to take the lead, 28-21. St. Mary’s rallied to cut the Javelina lead, 29-27, before a Tramble kill put the match away.
The Javelinas will host the Tarleton State TexAnns Saturday at 2 p.m. in their final regular season match. The team is currently tied with the TexAnns for sixth in the Lone Star Conference standings.
