San Angelo – Nothing went right for the Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team Thursday night as they dropped an 81-57 decision to Angelo State.
The Hogs trailed 37-21 at the half and never got closer then the 16-point halftime margin in the second half in dropping their third straight.
The loss dropped the Javelinas to 13-4 overall and 0-2 in league play. The Rams broke their two-game losing streak and improved to 7-11 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Rickey Huckaby led the Javelinas with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting, Bobby Pandy had 11 points off the bench and Remi Yusuf had his 46-game streak of scoring in double figures snapped as he had just eight points.
Point guard Ontario McKee continued his brilliant play against the Hogs by scoring 19 points and hit 8-of-11 shots. McKee, who is averaging just over six points per game, had a triple-double last year against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Javelinas led early on, 10-7, but the Rams put together a 14-0 run to grab a 21-10 lead.
The Hogs cut it to six by scoring five straight, but the Rams slowly pulled away and capped the first half with McKee driving the length of the floor in five seconds and scoring on a layup at the buzzer.
The second half opened with Marcus Hubbard scoring off an ally-oop slam off the opening tip and McKee hitting a wild running jumper over two Javelina players to make it 41-21.
Angelo State built the lead to as many as 28 points in the second half and shot 57 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes.
The Rams out-rebounded the Javelinas 46-23, made 9-of-21 3-point shots while the Hogs made only 3-of-20.
